Why Did Netflix Remove Harry Potter?

Why Did Netflix Remove Harry Potter

No, Netflix didn’t remove the Harry Potter movies from their site. They’re still all there. We can confirm that, and the featured image does too, as you can see.

But we think we know why you’re asking this – none of the movies is showing up when you search for them, right?

It’s not a bug or a weird glitch. Netflix just isn’t streaming those movies in your country. We’ll tell you why, and show you how to start watching these movies right now in this article.

So Why Aren’t the Movies Showing Up for You?

You just happen to be in a country where they aren’t available. It’s as simple as that. Netflix’s geo-blocks are preventing you from seeing the movies in your search results or watching them.

We can’t say for sure which countries don’t have the Harry Potter movies, but we’ll take a wild guess and say you’re from the US. If that’s the case, the problem is that Netflix doesn’t own licensing rights for your country. Its competitors do, instead.

Right now, it seems like NBCUniversal owns the rights (throughout 2021, at least). They streamed the movies for a short period on Peacock, and shortly moved them to their cable networks: SyFy and USA.

Because of that, Netflix can’t stream the movies in the US. If it were to do that, it would breach the agreements it signed. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that’d result in them getting sued into oblivion.

It’s pretty accurate to say that would also happen in any other country where you can’t watch Harry Potter on Netflix.

So Where Are the Harry Potter Movies Available on Netflix?

Since licensing agreements change often, it’s hard to offer you a full list of countries where these movies are available. Still, we can use StreamCatcher (a tool that crawls Netflix’s whole catalogue) to give you an idea of which places you can watch the movies from at the moment.

According to it, you can watch the first four movies in Spain, and the last four movies in Spain and Canada.

There are probably more countries where the franchise is available, and they might be added to StreamCatcher’s library in the future. If you know which places have these Netflix titles, don’t hesitate to tell us in the comments, though.

How to Unblock Harry Potter on Netflix

The best advice we can give is to use a VPN. It’s a service that unblocks geo-restricted content for you by stopping sites like Netflix from seeing where you’re from. VPNs do that by spoofing your IP address (basically, any site you visit will only see the VPN’s IP).

If you use Netflix with a Spanish VPN server, you should have no problem finding and watching all the movies. Netflix will think you’re actually in Spain, so it won’t trigger the geo-restrictions.

How Easy Is Using a VPN?

It’s extremely simple. You don’t need to worry about dealing with complicated setups or lengthy tutorials. With most providers, this is all you need to do:

  1. Sign into your account (after buying a subscription, of course).
  2. Download the appropriate VPN app for the device you’re using.
  3. Install the app. The installation shouldn’t take more than a few seconds, and the setup will offer you all the instructions you need.
  4. Run the app and connect to a server (a Spanish one in this case).
  5. That’s it! Log into your Netflix account and start watching the entire franchise.

How Fast Are VPNs?

It depends on the provider (and other factors). Generally, the top VPNs on the market have fast speeds. If you just want to watch the movies in SD or HD, you’ll only need 3 Mbps (for SD) or 5 Mbps (for HD). If you want 4K quality, however, you’ll need at least 25 Mbps.

Those speeds are easily achievable. Still, you might have to use a server that’s very far from your current geo-location. In that case, noticeable slowdowns can occur.

In our experience, the best way to solve that problem is to use a fast VPN protocol. Instead of OpenVPN which is pretty slow, you should stick to L2TP/IPSec, IKEv2, or WireGuard. If you use ExpressVPN, you can also take advantage of Lightway, their own proprietary protocol which offers lightning-fast speeds.

You might think that using PPTP is a good idea too, but we’d urge you to reconsider. It’s very fast, true, but its security is extremely poor. You’re much better off with WireGuard. It’s nearly as fast as PPTP and much safer to use.

Can You Watch Harry Potter with a VPN on More Than One Device at the Same Time?

Yes. VPN providers don’t really restrict you to using their service on just one device. Usually, you use the VPN on up to five or six device at the same time. That should be more than enough for most people.

But a few VPNs actually go the extra mile. Surfshark and IPVanish, for example, let you use their service on as many platforms as you want. That’s right – they offer unlimited simultaneous connections! That way, you can easily share your VPN subscription with everyone in your family, or just binge the Harry Potter movies on as many devices as you want!

Are the Harry Potter Movies Available in Your Country?
